In 2018, a group of parents formed a committee to look at fundraising to replace the existing play park equipment in Acharacle. They approached Acharacle Community Company to propose our involvement in the redevelopment, and it was decided that Acharacle Community Company would be involved.
After discussion, it was decided that the best option would be to purchase the land from Highland Council and redevelop the play park. We have since been in negotiations with Highland Council and these have been progressing well.
The sub-committee for the play park project contacted three companies, two of which came back with proposals. From their proposals, we looked at cost and suitability of equipment, and decided that Scotplay was the best option for us. We are in continuous contact with Scotplay to ensure we are planning for all project costs and that we are working well together to ensure the smooth installation of equipment.
We have been incredibly lucky to have received a number of donations from local individuals and businesses. This is hugely appreciated and we thank each and every one of them for their generosity.
As well as donations and fundraising events, we applied for grants to aid in reaching our fundraising total. We were very lucky to have received awards from Lochaber Community Fundraising, Arnold Clark Community Fund, People’s Postcode Trust, National Lottery Awards for All, the Scottish Salmon Company, AMP Clean Energy Charity Fund and Highland Council’s Place Based Investment Fund. We are so grateful for the support from these funders and acknowledge the great help they have been in reaching our target.
Fundraising for the play park redevelopment has been a real community effort and it has been fantastic to see the enthusiasm from all involved, in particular from our local children, whose innovation and determination in raising funds has been incredible. From sponsored runs and cycles, to making key rings and loom bands, they have continued to amaze us! Our target of £65,000 was reached in May 2023 and donations are still being received. Fundraising will continue to enable us to cover essential maintenance and insurance costs, as well as other costs which may arise. The new equipment was installed late summer 2023 and the official opening took place on Saturday 27th April 2024 with a lively Fun Day.
