In September 2023 Acharacle Community Company was awarded funding from the Highlands & Islands Climate Hub for a series of workshops and a pot-luck Climate Picnic! All our activities were planned in preparation for a disposable-free Picnic, as well as leaving an enduring legacy: e.g., learning how to make beeswax wraps (to be used instead of cling film) or using fermentation to prevent food waste. The Brownies and Guides did a litter pick in the village, turned second-hand plastic bags into kites and sewed colourful bunting from fabric remnants and clothes that were left over from the clothes swaps. We were very lucky with the weather on the day of our Big Picnic: it was dry, so we could have it in our Community Garden, as planned! Two volunteers provided live music, which created a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere. Several visitors brought food to share and we had ordered some tasty treats from our local East to West bakery as well. The children tried out the kites on the football pitch next to the Garden and took part in a slate painting activity: they painted a large piece of slate with “Community Garden” in colourful letters, as well as several smaller pieces, decorated with ladybirds, leaves, rainbows etc. Most of these were taken home by their makers, but a handful were hidden around the Garden, like a treasure hunt. Acharacle and Ardnamurchan Churches were also present with activities: making mini-bug-hotels out of empty tins as well as dough for people to bake share-and-tear bread at home. One of our e-bikes was available for people to try out and local company Scruples demonstrated their eco cleaning products, which were bought by a few of the visitors. We're looking forward to the next Climate Festival in September 2024!
