In 2021, Acharacle Primary School and Acharacle Community Company joined forces on an exciting tree-planting project.
The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) was a tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Everyone across the UK was being invited to plant trees from October 2021, when the tree-planting season begins, through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022.
To mark this occasion the Woodland Trust were providing trees to be planted all over the country, which will be mapped and form the Queen’s Green Canopy. This created a green legacy of its own, with every tree planted bringing benefits for people, wildlife and climate, now and for the future.
The Eco Committee secured 420 trees for community planting - the project supported the teaching of the importance of trees, how to look after our natural environment, alongside practical skills like tree identification, how to plant and look after trees. The trees were split into 4 groups:
Wild Harvest – Blackthorn, Elder, Hazel, Rowan, Crab Apple and Dog wood.
Wildlife – Hawthorn, Common Oak, Blackthorn, Silver Birch, Rowan and Hazel.
